Mentoring is a strategy to help us learn, ensuring self-directed learning is acknowledged and put to good use.
Mentoring encourages reflection that’s required to learn from experience.
The mentoring model:
This shows how I as a mentor lead a reflective conversation that results in constructive action.
In the first instance of this model I like to see what’s going on, and discover the mentee’s values and motivation, as this guides our behaviour.
I look at: Vision, Beliefs, Principles & Character, and order accordingly to importance.
I will of course offer information and make suggestions, but my aim is to listen and empower mentees by helping them to gain insights.
I help mentees to reflect via a number of techniques such as:
Talking – discussing conversation and alternative course of action.
Writing – by means of a reflective log or journal.
Thinking – self analysis in ways that increase self-awareness.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. – Benjamin Franklin
